Pasta with Chickpeas and Mussels

Pasta with Chickpeas and Mussels is an irresistible, creamy, and flavorful Italian recipe, perfect for those looking to elevate the classic pasta and chickpeas dish. This version combines the delicate taste of legumes with the intense and enticing flavor of mussels, enhanced by a hint of chili and the freshness of lemon zest.

The result is a comforting, fragrant, and surprising first course. Choosing mixed pasta is crucial for the right texture: an ancient and rustic format, born from the tradition of recovery, that holds the sauce perfectly and makes each bite even richer.

Cooked directly in the pan, like risotto, the pasta releases starch and becomes even more velvety, while the filtered water from the mussels adds natural saltiness and an unmistakable aroma. This simple yet characterful dish is perfect served hot with a sprinkle of pecorino cheese and fresh parsley.

Ingredients

  • 200g mixed pasta
  • 500g mussels
  • 240g cooked chickpeas
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1 red chili pepper
  • 1 lemon (zest)
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Clean the mussels thoroughly under running water. Heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a large pan, add the garlic clove and chili pepper, and sauté briefly.

  4. Gradually add the mussel cooking liquid and enough water to cook the pasta, stirring occasionally as if making risotto.
  5. Once the pasta is al dente, add the mussels, lemon zest, and season with salt and pepper.
  6. Serve hot, garnished with grated pecorino cheese and chopped parsley.
